5 Potential Vertigo Sources in Calgary

The onset of a vertigo episode can be extremely stressful and anxiety provoking.  Oftentimes, vertigo symptoms can appear without warning, leaving a person feeling very vulnerable.  It’s important to understand some potential sources of vertigo so you’ll know when and where to get vertigo relief in Calgary.  They include the following:

  1. Heart disease
  2. Recent problems with your ears
  3. Head injury – including motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries or other traumas
  4. Smoking
  5. Medications – some types of antidepressants and blood pressure medicines

If you’re suffering from vertigo, common relief options include physical therapy and medications to help cope with the symptoms. Another relief option that has been gaining popularity is upper cervical chiropractic.

Your Neck and Vertigo

Your spinal column is designed to give protection to your spinal cord.  The spinal cord itself carries signals between the brain and body, including critical information about body position and balance.  When the topmost vertebra in the spine (the atlas) misaligns, it can create a choke point within the spinal cord at the base of the skull.  This can impact signals going to and from the brainstem, which can potentially lead to vertigo attacks.

The goal of Calgary, AB upper cervical chiropractic is to keep your atlas in alignment.  NUCCA, the technique that we use in our practice, does a thorough job at analyzing the alignment of the vertebrae in the upper neck.  Even small, subtle misalignments can have the potential to cause a disturbance in normal function.  Through specific and gentle atlas corrections, the pressure within the spinal cord is reduced.  The signals traveling over the nerves, spinal cord, and brainstem can be sent and received properly.  This can lead to a reduction in the severity and/or frequency of vertigo symptoms.
