The Basics of Meniere’s Disease in Calgary

Meniere’s disease is a condition that affects the inner ear.  It can develop at any age, but is most likely to occur in adults between the ages of 40 and 60.  The symptoms of Meniere’s disease are caused by an accumulation of fluid in the inner ear, which contains sensors that are responsible for our body’s sense of balance.  There are a handful of hallmark symptoms associated with Meniere’s, which include:

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Hearing loss
  • Vertigo
  • Unpredictable bouts of dizziness
  • Loss of balance
  • Nausea or vomiting

Any one of these symptoms would be frustrating, at best, to deal with.  As a whole, they can completely disrupt life for the Meniere’s disease sufferer.

What Are My Relief Options?

When someone is diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, the first line of care will typically involve a combination of medications to reduce dizziness and nausea, along with dietary changes that limit salt.  Beyond that, for more severe cases, antibiotic injections into the middle ear and other surgical interventions might be recommended.  These may provide some much-needed relief, but they fail to address the root cause of the condition.

Helping Meniere’s Sufferers Naturally

When someone is experiencing tinnitus, vertigo, and other Meniere’s disease symptoms, it is important to look at the relationship between the inner ear and the vertebrae of the upper neck.  The atlas vertebra, which sits just beneath the skull, lies in close proximity to the inner ear and also protects the brainstem.  The brainstem is responsible for relaying signals traveling to and from the brain regarding balance.  When the atlas misaligns, it is possible for it to disturb normal brain-body communications and contribute to the cause of Meniere’s disease symptoms.

In a study that looked at 139 patients with a Meniere’s diagnosis who underwent a course of upper cervical chiropractic care, 136 experienced a significant reduction in their symptoms.  At Solara Health, we work to restore normal atlas alignment through upper cervical care Calgary.  By doing so, we are able to help Meniere’s disease sufferers get back to the quality of life they desire.
