Meniere’s Disease & Whiplash – Is There a Connection?

Meniere’s disease is classified as an inner ear disorder and causes a combination of symptoms, including vertigo, ringing in the ear, and fluctuating hearing loss.  The spontaneous vertigo episodes are perhaps the most distressing symptom of Meniere’s disease.  The rotational or spinning sensation can last for 10 minutes or up to 24 hours, and can also be associated with nausea and vomiting.  Even after vertigo subsides, many Meniere’s sufferers can be left feeling extremely fatigued.  If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Meniere’s you’re surely looking for answers and understanding on how to best approach relief.

Your Spine and Meniere’s Disease

Dr. Burcon, another upper cervical chiropractor, has done research into the potential cause of Meniere’s disease.  In one of his studies, patients were asked to rate their vertigo on a scale from zero to ten, with zero meaning no dizziness whatsoever, and 10 being the worst imaginable condition.  139 people participated in the study, and the initial numbers showed an average of 8.5.  Over the course of two years, the average dropped to 1.4.  The really astounding part of Dr. Burcon’s study was that there was one thing each of these patients had in common – some type of injury to the head and/or neck.  In most cases, this injury was caused by a motor vehicle accident, and a number of participants in the study had suffered a whiplash injury that had gone undiagnosed.

If you are suffering from Meniere’s disease or another vertigo-inducing condition, then it just makes sense to have the alignment of your upper cervical spine checked.  It doesn’t take a major car accident or injury to cause an upper cervical misalignment.  Many people may not think they’ve been hurt because they were able to “walk it off” and didn’t have any broken bones.  When the atlas, the uppermost vertebra in the spine, misaligns, it can irritate the brainstem and surrounding nerves, which can be a contributing factor in vertigo attacks.  If you’re in the Calgary area, and you’re living with vertigo, we are here to help you obtain Calgary vertigo relief among other things.  Why suffer endlessly without answers when a gentle, specific upper cervical chiropractic adjustment can get you back on the road to recovery and relief.
