A retinal migraine is a term that describes the type of a migraine that affects the eyesight in one eye. It can also be called an ocular migraine or an ophthalmic migraine. No one is sure as to the cause of a retinal migraine. However, some feel that it has to do with blood flow. Blood flow can be hindered if a person has had a trauma or accident that has affected the head or neck.
So, how does someone know if the problem is actually a retinal migraine? Here are some symptoms to look for:
- Only one eye is affected.
- Problems with vision such as flashing lights, patterns in the visual field, dark spots, or even vision loss. Sometimes temporary blindness may happen.
- The symptoms are reversible. Permanent vision problems are not a part of retinal migraines.
- A person must have had at least two attacks to be diagnosed.
- A headache usually begins during the visual problems or within an hour after they discontinue. It can last for hours or even as long as three days. It is often one-sided, pulsating, and causes sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea.

What Causes Retinal Migraines, and What Can Help?
If a person had an accident that caused a misalignment in the upper vertebrae of the neck, this could be the underlying cause of a retinal migraine. This is due to the fact that a misalignment here can hinder blood flow to the brain and, therefore, to the eye or optic nerve.
As an upper cervical chiropractor, I am familiar with the way that upper neck misalignments cause problems throughout the body. I have been specifically trained to detect these misalignments through the latest scientific methods and specific x-ray protocols. Once the misalignment is located, I work with each patient individually to correct this and bring his or her body back into as healthy a state as possible. Many patients have reported that once the spine is back in alignment, retinal migraines are a thing of the past.
