Solara Health – Helping Patients to Cope with Vertigo

Vertigo has been described as the sensation that the person or the objects around him are spinning. A link has been noted between previous injuries to the head or neck and the onset of vertigo, although this may not happen immediately. Most people hope that neck soreness or pain will eventually go away on its own. However, if not cared for, neck injuries often begin to affect the vestibular system negatively – the system that is responsible for balance.

The head weighs anywhere from 10 to 14 pounds and relies on the bones of the upper cervical spine –particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae – to support it properly. If a misalignment exists here, the weight of the head becomes unevenly distributed. Something called righting reflex then kicks in. This is the body’s way of keeping the eyes level with the horizon line. In order to do this, the bones of the spine must shift in order to compensate, thereby causing pressure on the brainstem.

The Onset of Vertigo

The brainstem has an important role when it comes to maintaining balance. It is the communication highway between the body and the brain. If a misalignment is causing it not to function at its optimum, signals being sent from the vestibular system and information about where the body is located in its environment can become distorted. This can lead to vertigo and a variety of other health problems.

Finding Help for Vertigo

Here at our practice, we have been able to help patients find some Calgary, AB vertigo relief successfully. In fact, some have even seen vertigo disappear after only a few adjustments. The method we use to realign the bones of the neck is very gentle. Through this precise technique, the bones are encouraged to move back into place, helping the brainstem to work properly once again. When proper signals to the brain are restored, vertigo often goes away.
