The Brain, The Nervous System and The Origin of Migraines

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, over 38 million men, women, and children across North America suffer from migraines.  When this statistic is broken down, it amounts to someone in every four households that lives with migraines.  For as common as migraines are, the mechanism by which they happen is still not very thoroughly understood.  Migraines are a combination of sometimes debilitating pain and neurological symptoms, including visual disturbances, extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and touch, and nausea or vomiting.

A recent study done on animals suggests that migraines may have their origins deep within the brain.  Researchers studied the effects in rats of two vasodilators – medications that cause the blood vessels to widen, increasing blood flow.  They found when one of these vasodilators was given that it increased activity in an area in the center of the brain that mimicked the symptoms of a migraine.

Interestingly, this is a phenomenon that upper cervical chiropractors have been aware of for quite some time.  The idea that the nervous system handles coordinating the function of the other systems of the body is fundamental to upper cervical chiropractic.  These functions include both regulation of neurotransmitter production and release, as well as controlling blood vessel diameter.  Dr. Bohemier’s focus is to restore normal function to the central nervous system by removing pressure on the brainstem caused by a very specific misalignment of the uppermost two bones in the neck.

In his Calgary upper cervical chiropractic clinic, Dr. Bohemier helps his migraine patients regain their quality of life.  Migraines can be quite debilitating, and most relief options are aimed at merely relieving symptoms, but Dr. Bohemier’s solution addresses the root cause.
