Understanding the Cause of Episodic Migraines

For anyone that has dealt with the debilitating pain of a migraine even once, they know how it can impact not just their own life, but the lives of those around them – family, friends, employers and co-workers alike.  Migraines can come in many varieties, frequencies, and severities.  When a person suffers with what is labeled as episodic migraines, they experience less than 15 migraines per month.   That works out to approximately 3-4 migraines per week, a terrible condition to bear.  A chronic migraine sufferer experiences 15 or more migraine days per month.

A recent study published in Neurology points toward a potential discovery of a biomarker in the blood of people who experience migraines episodically.   A biomarker is a substance that, when present, indicates that a particular condition may exist.  In the case of episodic migraine sufferers, the biomarker ceramide was present in much lesser quantities in the migraine patients than in the patients who did not experience migraines.  The scientists discovered that as the total ceramide levels increased, the overall risk of developing a migraine decreased.

While relief care options may provide the temporary relief that many people are looking for, the underlying cause of migraines is never addressed.  In his upper cervical chiropractic practice, Dr. Bohemier helps his patients to understand and address the root cause of many migraine types.  This cause lies in a specific misalignment of the top two vertebrae of the neck, the C1 and C2.  When misaligned, these two vertebrae impede normal nervous system function and blood flow, causing the dysfunction leading to migraines.  By gently realigning the neck, the body is allowed to heal from migraines and headaches, not just temporarily but for the long term.
