Vertigo and Your Neck

All of a sudden, the room is spinning around you, or you feel as if you are spinning around even though you’re still – you’re experiencing a vertigo attack.  There could be many reasons why this is happening.  Vertigo can arise from a problem with the body’s vestibular system (the inner ear), it can be an issue with vision, or the problem can be in the proprioceptive system, which relays information from sensors in the feet, trunk, and spine to the brain.  This can be an alarming experience, especially when you don’t know the reason why this is happening.  Many people don’t think to associate a past injury to the head or neck with the onset of vertigo, but the fact is that it’s an important link to look at.

What Does the Research Say?

A study conducted with 60 vertigo patients revealed some interesting connections.  Of the 60 participants, 56 of them could recall at least one head or neck trauma that occurred prior to the onset of their symptoms.  These traumas included car accidents, sports injuries (such as skiing or cycling), and falls down stairs.  Every one of the 60 patients evaluated was found to have a specific misalignment in the upper cervical area of the spine.  All 60 patients responded favorably to upper cervical chiropractic care. 48 were symptom-free following the care, and the remaining 12 reported improvement in the severity and/or frequency of their vertigo attacks.

What Does This Mean for Me?

If you are suffering from vertigo and haven’t been checked for atlas misalignment, that may be the missing piece you’ve been looking for.  At Solara Health, we assess each of our patients for this specific upper cervical problem, as it is the underlying cause of vertigo as well as many other health conditions.  I am trained in the NUCCA technique for atlas correction.  What that means for you is specific and gentle corrections based on your individual needs and corrections that are designed to hold in place for a longer time, giving you lasting relief.  Don’t let vertigo continue to impact your life. Contact us for more information about how upper cervical chiropractic care may be the answer you’ve been seeking.
