Migraines can be a debilitating condition, leading to decreased productivity and a loss of quality of life. Both men and women are affected, however women are 3 times more likely to suffer from migraines than men. In America, of the more than 36 million people who live with migraines, 27 million of them are women. Women report longer-lasting and more chronic migraine episodes than do men.1
Over half of migraines in women happen right before, during, or after her menstrual cycle.2 The link between a woman’s menstrual cycle and migraines is still unclear, but during that time, many hormonal changes are occurring that may contribute to triggering a migraine episode. About two thirds of women who have migraines report that they improved after going through menopause2
The Nervous System and the Endocrine System
Upper cervical chiropractors understand the link between nervous system function and endocrine system function. The endocrine system is responsible for the production and release of hormones that regulate metabolism, reproductive function, sleep, and mood, to name a few. Hormones released during the menstrual cycle are also regulated by the endocrine system under the control of the central nervous system.

In Calgary, Dr. Jean-Paul Bohemier is able to perform a specific analysis to determine the level of disruption in nervous system function due to a misalignment (subluxation) of the upper cervical vertebra C1 and C2. A subluxation in this area has the ability to decrease neurological function that may be an underlying cause to the source of migraines. Realigning the upper cervical spine and restoring normal biomechanics allows the body’s inherent recuperative abilities to function optimally. Patients with migraines and other types of headaches who sought out a natural approach to relief were able to see positive results in as little as one or two visits to an upper cervical chiropractor.3
